Safe To Learn
Bullying is an issue in many schools. Certainly the school I had been involved with had a significant issue with the majority of students dissatisfied with the level of bullying and the way that the school treated it.
After some research I decided to push for positive approach to bullying and to start a “Safe to learn” campaign. This had three key areas:
- Discuss Monitor and Review
- Identify and Respond
- Take parents/carers seriously
We held a safe to learn conference with pupils from the student voice and parents. The agenda for this is attached below. From this we agreed an action plan (attached below) and initiated a two week Safe to Learn campaign. This included assemblies, PSHE, form time and work in English and Art. Middle leaders created lesson plans around the issue (for example poetry from different cultures in English) as they had created the lessons they had ownership.
Student voice spent some of their money on pledge bracelets (pupils are usually not allowed to wear these). These were inexpensive and pupils paid for them. Forms signed an anti bullying pledge. Importantly we also had some CPD with staff about their responsibilities to report bullying and an agreed approach to tackling it.
